Threads is not a real threat to Twitter
User engagement on Meta's Threads service has been dropping like a rock!
There’s been a massive amount of hype about Meta’s Threads service. Threads is an offshoot of Instagram, and it has been dubbed a “Twitter killer” by many in the technology press. Mark Zuckerberg’s strategy has been to leverage the Instagram audience and use it as a seed community for Threads.
Threads is so tied into Instagram that currently, if you try to cancel your Threads account, you also delete your Instagram account. Meta has said that, in the future, they will likely give users the option to delete their Threads account while still keeping Instagram.
Threads and the Fediverse
Another part of Meta’s plan includes federation with Mastodon and other servers on the fediverse. If you don’t know what the fediverse is, see this article and this one for background. I’m not going to go into detail here explaining it.
Meta’s Threads did not launch with support for federation. So Threads is not connected right now to the fediverse, it exists on its own, without the ability for Threads users …
